Part of Fortune is one of the Ancient Astrological methods that has endured through the ages, invoking perhaps even more fascination in the Modern Astrological Era. Part of Fortune, or even known as Fortuna, Pars Fortuna & Lot of Fortune: is an Astrological Point in the Natal (& of course other types of) Chart that represents our Innate ability to attain Worldly Success, Abundance & Prosperity. Indicating one’s Natural Talents, Good Luck & Gifts, this Calculated Point has the symbol that looks like an ‘x’ inside a circle 「 ⨂ 」

Part of Fortune (PoF) is one of the many Arabic Parts & Hermetic Lots, dating back to its use since 1BC (perhaps much older). Although most famously associated with Arabic Parts (align with 500+ such similar Parts); Lot of Fortune, Lot of Spirit, Lot of Eros, Lot of Victory, … are also some of the Lots of Hermetic (7 in Total, we can dive deeper into them one by one soon enough ;). In general, these are points in our Chart, calculated with Ascendant, Sun & Moon (along with other planets like Venus, Jupiter, etc.). PoF in particular is calculated with one’s Ascendant, Sun & Moon degrees. The exact Time of Birth becomes crucial, since degrees of these placements along with day or night time of birth becomes important for accuracy.

Here is a bit of Math & Geometry if you would like to learn how to calculate the traditional way.

Traditionally there are two Formulas to calculate Part of Fortune, one for the Day Chart and other for the Night Chart. If your Sun Placement lies on the top of the Natal Chart (i.e., from 7th House to 12th House), then you have a Day Chart.

Part of Fortune = Ascendant + Moon - Sun 

If your Sun Placement is in the bottom of your Natal Chart (i.e., from 1st House to 6th House), then you have a Night Chart.

Part of Fortune = Ascendant + Sun - Moon

Now the degree of each Placement will need to be converted in order to equate them to 360° of a circle (Chart). 

Simplest way to do that is to divide every house and equate them to the degrees of a circle, 360° / 12 = 30° each. Here’s a chart for easy reference. 

Now, let’s learn to calculate PoF from an example,

Pisces ♓️ Ascendant 16° 04’ 

Converting : Pisces ♓️ starts at 330°, so Ascendant is at 330° + 16° 04’ = 346° 04’

Sagittarius ♐️ Sun 14° 57’ 

Converting : Sagittarius ♐️ starts at 240°, so Sun is at 240° + 14° 57’ = 254° 57’

Leo ♌️ Moon 4° 02’

Converting : Leo ♌️ starts at 120°, so Moon is at 120° + 4° 02’ = 124° 02’

Let’s assume that this is a Day Chart,

Then,

Part of Fortune = Ascendant + Moon - Sun

PoF = 346° 04’ + 254° 57’ - 124° 02’ = 215° 09’ = 5° 09’ + 210° 

where, 210° is at the start of Scorpio, so 

Part of Fortune here is in Scorpio 5° 09’ (which lies in the 8th House of the respective Chart)

Interpreting Part of Fortune is much like any other placement in the chart.
